For the last two years I've been on WW off and on. Each time doing it for a few weeks and then giving up because I hadn't lost anything and sometimes I even gained. I tried other diets, like South Beach and Atkins with no luck either. A couple months ago I went hardcore and dropped down to only eating 1 meal a day. Nothing happened. I'd lose a lb only to have 2 more come on the following week. So I rejoined 4 weeks ago with the attitude that I'm going to do this EXACTLY as they specify. And I am. The first two weeks I dropped an amazing 10.8 lbs. The third week, nothing. The fourth week I've gained 2lbs. ARGGGHHHH!!! I'm not even close to that time of the month, so it's not water retention (not to mention that I haven't had much salt either).
Anyways, I got to thinking about what was so different about those first two weeks where I had actually seen my first loss in over two years. I realized that those two weeks I had temporarily stopped taking the pill. So I thought back and realized that this time of difficulty losing weight coincided with when I switched jobs, which made me switch health insurance, which led to me switching brands of BC pills.
I didn't even think this might be a problem because what I switched to is supposed to be the generic version of what I was using. I had briefly been on a different generic of that brand with no issues. However, these pills, unlike the old brand, which I had been on for 9 years with no problems (not to mention had no issue losing 50lbs in 6 months with WW), have caused several side effects that I never experienced with the name brand version or the other generic.
My doctor is letting me switch back.

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Thu, January 31, 2008 - 5:23 PMI am glad you were able to figure that out. How frustrating! -

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 7:22 AMI was on some other boards last night and I've found tons of other women that have experienced the exact same side effects (including the weight gain and inability to lose it) from this specific generic. -

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:32 AMwhat is the name? -
-
Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:34 AMThe generic is Tri-Sprintec which is *supposed* to be the same as Ortho-Tricyclen. There were a ton of women that said they had taken the brand name for years with no problems and then when they switched they had issues. -

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 12:31 PMcrap crap CRAP! my doctor now says she doesn't want to change it because they are both the exact same blah blah blah. I told her that none of these symptoms occured on the Ortho but started right when I started the Tri-Sprintec. And she thinks it has nothing to do with switching to the generic. -

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss

Shoot--time to research.

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 2:14 PMor how about a zero hormone IUD? -
-
Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 3:49 PMI'm not really a candidate for the IUD unfortunately.
Any BC pill that isn't a generic I have to pay full price for (which I think is total B.S. because I doubt they charge men full price for Viagra). The one that I want to go back to is $60/pack
I've got an appointment with Planned Parenthood next Wednesday. I can get the brand name from them for $20/pack.
I guess it's all about being as resourceful as possible. -

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 8:09 PMI'd say it's DEFINITELY worth it to go to planned parenthood and get the $20 pack. Smart of you to call them. -

Re: The BC Pill and my weightloss
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 8:22 AMI am a man so I cannot comment on "the pill", I also cannot comment on "Viagra" either. I do think that the Doc really should listen to you!! I think the problem with MD's is the first part of their title MEDICAL or medicine. I am not bashing doctors by any means, I have a tremendous amount of respect for their knowledge and dedication.
Osteopaths, that is the way to go in my book and I guess if an Osteopath doesn't work then it is time to go to Planned Parenthood :-)
Why is it that when someone wants to lose weight and be healthier they are held back by a system that is supposed to be there to help that person be healthy in the first place?
Get the correct pills, keep losing the weight, and stay positive!!!!!!
