You are (and are not) an Island

A dear friend who is also on a weight loss journey wrote this to me today: "I feel very supported hearing my experiences and feelings echoed. Makes me feel like I'm not an island."

I wrote this in response... I rather enjoyed it and thought it might be inspirational for everyone on their journey of growth.

was sharing to help you see that while you are an island -- it is your journey and yours alone -- it is more like we're a string of islands really close together rather than with an ocean between us and just a stones throw away rather than a 6 hour plane ride. I can't walk your walk for you... I can't choose your path for you... but I can send up fire works as I understand things to arise that hopefully will lighten the load and brighten your day.

(Change, any change, and in this context especially...) Weight loss isn't about overnight change, but about lifelong change. So it is about how you deal with it through time, not in any one moment. If you graphed your feelings of control v. out of control through time, how did you do overall?

Keep focus on the trend, not any one point in the graph -- any high can be just as disillusioning as any low. They are just moments to be cherished and learned from rather than clung to like a life preserver.

Your committment and certainty will have you return to the path every time you wander off, even if you it take more than a minute, or hour, or day, or week or even month.

You know what you want. Hold fast to that and all else will follow. Of this i am certain.

You have great power within you... and i know you know this. I merely hold up the glass in the moments when you're too tired to pick it up for yourself. ;)

Do you tell people that you're doing WW?
I'm really weird about it. Two people know (other than you guys). My fiance, and a friend of mine that's also doing it. My best friend doesn't know and my family doesn't know. I've basically banned Tom from saying anything to anyone. I esp. don't want my mother knowing. I guess it's because a lot of my food related issues stem from my relationship with her.

Bike ride 545 Miles -- training to lose weight -- EEK!

Greetings. I'm writing for two reasons. One is in the hopes of providing some inspiration. the other is as a request for support.

Since my heaviest, i've lost 130+ pounds. You can see a before and after photo here which also has a bit of my story:
http://aidslifecycle.org/6893

After finally reaching a weight where i am no longer clinically obese -- for the first time as an adult at the age of almost 39 -- i have decided to kick my own ass off by training for the Aids Life Cycle Ride. I am hoping that through this process i let go of all the extra padding and finally allow myself to shine in a leaner, stronger, more powerful body. Don't get me wrong -- i love myself exactly where i am and as i am. And, i also want to do this 545 mile ride in 7 days because it is a challenge and i want to prove to myself i will never go back to being the same girl who could gain 144 pounds in 22 months and not even notice it.

I'm wondering if anyone here has done the ride...? if you know anyone who has been obese who did it? And, I'm also wondering if you've done a crazy physical challenge like this yourself and if you have any insight to share....?

I don't really even ride a bike so much and even though i'm very active these days and i'm working out 7 times a week, and i'm a professional dancer (poi fire dancing) and instructor. Even with all that i am still feeling like this is a bit beyond my capabilities, especially given that i'm also launching my second company in 8 weeks.

I could use any brilliant insights i can get, so if you have them, please share!

finally, if you're moved to support me in the ride, you can post a message at the link above and even donate funds -- all proceeds are going to support AIDs awareness, education and assistance to those living with HIV and AIDs.

I hope this finds you having a beautiful day. many blessings...

The BC Pill and my weightloss

For the last two years I've been on WW off and on. Each time doing it for a few weeks and then giving up because I hadn't lost anything and sometimes I even gained. I tried other diets, like South Beach and Atkins with no luck either. A couple months ago I went hardcore and dropped down to only eating 1 meal a day. Nothing happened. I'd lose a lb only to have 2 more come on the following week. So I rejoined 4 weeks ago with the attitude that I'm going to do this EXACTLY as they specify. And I am. The first two weeks I dropped an amazing 10.8 lbs. The third week, nothing. The fourth week I've gained 2lbs. ARGGGHHHH!!! I'm not even close to that time of the month, so it's not water retention (not to mention that I haven't had much salt either).

Anyways, I got to thinking about what was so different about those first two weeks where I had actually seen my first loss in over two years. I realized that those two weeks I had temporarily stopped taking the pill. So I thought back and realized that this time of difficulty losing weight coincided with when I switched jobs, which made me switch health insurance, which led to me switching brands of BC pills.

I didn't even think this might be a problem because what I switched to is supposed to be the generic version of what I was using. I had briefly been on a different generic of that brand with no issues. However, these pills, unlike the old brand, which I had been on for 9 years with no problems (not to mention had no issue losing 50lbs in 6 months with WW), have caused several side effects that I never experienced with the name brand version or the other generic.

My doctor is letting me switch back.

Whew. It feels good. I'm still struggling, but today I weighed in for my first week of actually counting points on the Flex program at WW. I lost 3 pounds even. I stayed pretty much within boundaries (in daily point limits and the extra points allowed), but I splurged on a sliver of pie, and some maui short ribs from trader joe's. Stay AWAY from those short ribs...there's like a gazillion fat grams in a serving. NOT worth it. I also ate about 2-3 portions of flank steak last night, but I didn't feel as badly as if I had eaten ribeye or something. All reasonable amounts and even when I wanted to go nuts eating badly, I was able to be smart about it. That hadn't happened in a long while!

How is everyone else doing?

I have no trouble being 'good' around my family, but my husband and his family are Italian and they love big portions and pasta and cheese. My husband likes food, period, and a lot of it. He has tried weight loss before, and was successful, losing around 75 pounds. This was after learning he was a type 2 diabetic. Now, he has gained it all back, and has been eating poorly for quite a while.
After trying several times to diet together, I decided finally to do WW on my own. My feeling is that if he wants to do it, he will along with me. I just don't want to feel like I am responsible for someone else's successes and failures and I need to look out for myself instead of trying to motivate my husband constantly. When one of us fails, the other one usually follows...we aren't very good at supporting one another (ie if one of us wants pizza, the other one usually says 'sure'). So, I'm doing WW on my own, while my husband who has about 120 pounds to lose just gets heavier and heavier. I do all of the grocery shopping and buy only healthy things, so he buys his own junk when he's out and eats what I cook for the most part at home. So, it's not too difficult for me to stay on track because the right food IS at home. It's just hard because I wish we could be on the same page, entirely. I also sometimes look at him and because he's not willing to change, or motivated enough to change, I think if he's not going to get healthier, why should I? Other times it fuels my fire and I feel like doing better.
Is anyone in a similar situation?

Hi, all. I'm coming out of lurkdom!
I've been struggling with my weight for YEARS. This time, it's IT. I am determined to lose this extra poundage. I'm back on weight watchers, and am somewhat struggling to get back on track after going off the diet for a while. I've lost about 36 pounds pounds since August, but over the last few months I haven't been counting points, and therefore losing far less per week. I stopped going to meetings because I was recovering from some surgery, and am now going every week.
I have my own private tribe (dedicated to my weight loss) filled with friends who I feel support me, but I'm glad to have found another spot to share with people who face the same challenges!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Carly, I'm new to this tribe and on week 2 of Weight watchers. I'm hoping to find new friends here who are on the same journey as I am. I'm hoping to lose 120 pound in the next 18 months. it sounds like a lot but when you break it down to bare bones its just 1.67 pounds a week.

I didn't lose any weight the first week.....I'm now trying much harder to stick to the plan

Does anyone here have any tips?

I had an appendectomy very late Friday Night. Since Thursday I've eaten a package of Saltine Crackers, two cans of condensed chicken soup, jello, some beef broth, a glass of milk, a teeny tiny box of apple juice and 1/2 cup of coffee. I've drank TONS of water, not to mention all the IV fluids I received.
I stepped on the scale this morning and I've gained 10lbs in two days!!! I'm sure hoping that's all water gain. Anyone have any experience with this?

Eliminating foods

Over the last year I've decided to just focus on eating healthy foods. I'm slowly eliminating the bad stuff.
I started with hydrogenated oils. I cut them completely out.
Then I moved to High Fructose Corn Syrup. By eliminating the trans fats and HFCS I've greatly reduced the amount of processed food that I eat.
I'm also trying to eat only organic foods, as much as I can.
I then completely eliminated artificial sweeteners. I've done enough research on them to realize the are not safe and I just don't want to ingest poison anymore.
Now I'm eliminating the hardest part. I'm getting rid of grains from my diet. I've read some research about how humans aren't really built to have grains be a staple of their diet. I'm not talking about carbs. Fruit and vegetables have carbs. But they are also part of our natural diet. This all kind of stems from my pets believe it or not. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Over the years I've lost pets to food related illnesses and I started researching animal nutrition. I soon realized that the best food for them was their natural food, and it has done wonders. Once I started feeding them what they were supposed to eat their health improved drastically. So I've been thinking about this and realized that the same would be true for us too. We're not much different. We evolved to have a specific diet too.

We'll see how this goes....

WW not working for me

so I rejoined WW because I'm getting married and finally don't want to be this heavy anymore. The wedding is a great motivator. WW worked really well for me a few years ago when I was in college, back when it was Winning Points. Well this time around it didn't work at all.

I followed it to a T. Got all my dairy, multivitamin, water, stayed within my points and exercised 30-45 min every day. The first week I gained 2 lbs. Second week I stayed the same. Third week the same....So I dropped my points. I still didn't lose anything, not even a 10th of a lb. Talk about frustrating.

So I've dropped my calories to about 20-24 points and I finally lost 3lbs! So I've lost a total of 1lb from when I started 4 weeks ago. Ugh, I hate this.

South Beach Question

As David has posted, he and I started South Beach earlier this month. He's had some great success with it and I'm struggling. I lost 6lbs the first week which is awesome but I've since started going backwards. I did have my TOM and that could be part of it but here the book is claiming most people lost a ton of weight the first two weeks and I'm going the wrong direction. It certainly is frustrating.

Has anyone else done South Beach and had similar problems? I know this group was formed from a core that did Weight Watchers at one point but I didn't know if others had tried this route.

115 Pounds Retirement Anniversary

Aloha!

This past Thursday, June 21 (Solstice no less) - I celebrated my fourth year of ongoing amazing health. After maintaining a healthy weight for six months, I decided that "I made it!" It also happened to be June of 2003!

If you were to tell me I would permanently retire so much weight 10 years ago, I'da laughed ya right out of my house! I LOVED food too much!

I still DO LOVE FOOD! Thankfully, I've found a program that works where so many left me to confused, hungry, broke or a combo platter there of! From what I've witnessed from others on this program, the song they sing is similar to mine! The song title? "You Name It! I've Tried It!"

One of the many ways I sustain good health is savoring the compliments I receive - especially from those who "knew me when . . ." So, I decided to join this tribe and share my success story!

For anyone on their path to better health . . . IT IS doable! One step at a time . . . mixed with a bunch of laughs and a few tears. . . . this I know from personal experience . . .

To begin to "give back" what I've so readily received, I've created a retreat designed to help discover that it's more important to watch what goes in your MIND than in your MOUTH. If anyone is interested in learning more, happy to share what I can. (My profile has all sorts of details for your entrainment.)

Kindly know I respect your time, intelligence and passion to enjoy ongoing good health. Should you contact me, you'll notice our connection will be free of judgment and expectations.

I wish one and all a refreshing day . . .

Namaste

I've been having this overwhelming feeling of wanting to start running again. It's almost a restlessness. In high school I played soccer and then in college I used to trail run. I've gained 70lb since then so I realize it's not going to be easy. I ordered a sports bra last weekend and it still hasn't come in. I have two dogs, so I know they will enjoy this, and my boyfriend runs. I would LOVE to join him.

counting days not pounds

well still am looking to pounds but focusing on days.

Sunday Darling Husband gave me my 120 day chip. we are using the chips they give out at AA / NA they go by days sober I translate that to days on program. it is a great anchor and seems to be meaning more to me. I think first about how many days I have and second about losing weight. I figure

Weight is a cyclically quantity,
Weight loss tends in the downward direction.

My ego invests way too much in what the scale says,
as if it were looking in some sort of mirror.

Today I will judge the day and myself
by how I feel tonight when
I put my head down on the pillow.
squeaky-clean adherence to my plan,
always pushing forward.

What more can I ask for?

What more do I really need?

Much like a mirror,
the scale can be a helpful tool
from time to time.
Spend your life in front of it,
judging what you see,
And you will not see.

if you need a # in the 120 days I am down 30 pounds

Why is it that if I go to Subway and I ask for lowfat mayo, that means to them to put more on? I need to learn to be more verbal - "NOT TOO MUCH" but if I don't say that they absolutely smother my sandwich like it's supposed to be glue to keep all the veggies inside? UGH!

Participants Needed for a Research Study on Relationships in Childhood, Social Support, and Health Status
I am a Ph.D. student studying Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. I am recruiting participants for a study looking at relationships in childhood, social support, and health status. Participants must be between the ages of 25 and 45, residents of the United States or Canada, and not currently pregnant. Your participation would consist of filling out a short online questionnaire that will take about 30 minutes to complete. Your answers will remain anonymous, so no one can identify your answers. Participation is completely voluntary, and you may stop participating at any time; however, because the study is anonymous, the data cannot be removed once you have submitted your responses. You may also choose not to answer certain questions without any consequences. If you would like to participate in this study, please click on the following link:

Up until this week I've been doing great. So this week I've been wondering why I am gaining weight. I'm drinking my water (plus some), writing everything down, getting my healthy guidelines in, started walking again etc. I've also noticed that in the mornings I have a headache.

Well, today I think I figured it out! At my desk I have a 32 oz Nalgene Bottle. I fill it up 3x a day. When I fill it up I add 1 of those Crystal Light On-the-Go packs. You're supposed to add one packet to 16 oz of water, but I like the "lighter" flavor so I dilute 1 packet in twice the amount of water. No big deal. Well this week I switched flavors. I was using the Raspberry Lemonade but they only had Peach Tea at the store last week. I totally spaced it and didn't even think to look and see what was in it. Today I looked and saw that it's got instant tea as the main ingredient. Well duh! I'm gaining because I've been drinking only caffeinated beverages all week. Which explains the headaches, because I don't drink caffeine.

Jackie's story

Jackie has left our tribe but she did email me her insperational story and said I can share it. SHe is proof it can be done. She is my HERO

My Weight Loss Journey

My journey started when I was very young, about 9 years old. In the 4th grade my parents put me on my first diet. It was very calorie restrictive, leaving me light headed, and starving all the time. They were well meaning, but lacked the knowledge of putting together a well balanced diet for a young child. I ended up starting a bad habit which stayed with me most of my life, sneaking food. If I ate when no one was watching, it didn’t count, right? As a teen I continued to gain weight. I was desperate, trying every diet on the market. Cambridge, liquid protein, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Low Carb, High Carb, Low Fat, High Protein, shots from the doctor, you name it, I tried it. Through my twenties I maintained, but once I had children my weight gain accelerated, my weight was now over 300 pounds.

How did this happen, what went wrong? As a young child, I rarely got any fresh vegetables, or fruits. My diet consisted mainly of, beans, rice, chicken, beef, noodles, and pre-packaged foods. I didn’t know what a balanced diet was, when I became an adult I ate the same way I was brought up with. Along with the physical aspects, came the physiological problems of being morbidly obese. I was using food as an emotional pacifier. When things got upsetting to me, I turned to food to soothe me. I ate all the time, mostly when alone.

I hated myself, the way I looked, the way I felt. I never felt pretty, sexy, or healthy. I felt worthless. I couldn’t go to the movies, couldn’t fit in the seats, forget about going on an airplane, I wasn’t about to buy two seats. Turn styles, those were the worst, ever got stuck in one, I did. Couldn’t go on the rides at Disneyland with my children, the bar wouldn’t fit over my belly. I couldn’t even do what was most important to me, go out and eat, I had to be sure that the restaurant had chairs without arms; I couldn’t fit into a booth without my breast resting on the table. Gross to see something like that in the next booth, just imagine being suck in that body, it’s a nightmare. Yes, a self imposed nightmare, an endless cycle of self hate, then eating to calm yourself down, and then hating yourself even more.

Five years ago I hit rock bottom. I read an article at the hair dressers about Carnie Wilson, and how she had lost all of her weight with Gastric Bypass Surgery. That was the answer to my nightmare! I called the hospital, went to the seminars, and took all the tests. I knew the odds of death, but I didn’t care, I rather be dead then in the body I was in now. I was ready to go, then I received a phone call from the doctor’s office, my insurance will not cover the procedure! (this was before they were approving them) I couldn’t believe it! I cried for days, I was so depressed. My husband stepped in at this point and he said wanted me to try just one more time to try and take the weight off by dieting, if that didn’t work then he would pay for the surgery out of our savings, but I really had to try and follow the plan that was given to me. I knew it wouldn’t work, but he made an appointment for me at a center that sold you your food that you can eat for the week. I went in all red eyed, with the most horrible attitude. The lady who helped me had the same name as me “Jackie”, she was as sweet as can be, but I was being a total bitch, it was just a waste of time. I paid for my food, went home and promised my husband to follow the plan to the “T”.

Six months later, I was down 50 pounds! I stayed on the program, which consisted of a well balanced, low calorie diet. This diet was perfect for me, it gave me portion control with it’s pre-packaged meals. People kept telling me stop eating when you are full. Come to find out, I never feel full unless I am at the point of being sick. It has always been that way for me, and still to this day don’t get a full feeling unless I am stuffed. My body does not send the signals to my brain telling me that I have eaten enough. I had learned to eat 5 to 6 small (250 calorie) meals a day. This meant I only had to wait a few hours before my next meal, which was a great help since I felt hungry all the time.

For the next 8 months after my 50 pound loss, I didn’t lose anything, in fact the weight started to come back on. I was losing motivation. At this point I hired a personal trainer to get me kick started. The first thing he did was drop my calories from 1700 a day to 1200 a day. I was trained 3 days a week, and I was told to come into the gym and do cardio for the other three days, Sunday was my day off. I started going to the gym 6 days a week. I was so sore, but within the first 6 weeks, I was down, 26 pounds! It wasn’t easy; you are talking about a person who could not get herself up from the floor. This trainer put me through a full resistance/weight training program. He insisted that I needed to put muscle on, that would increase my metabolism, making my body burn more calories just to exist. I thought the muscle would just make me bigger, but the opposite was true. At one point I was working so hard, that my trainer cut my cardio days down to only ½ hour, I was starting to lose lean body tissue, instead of fat. When I started my body fat was at 56%: .today three years later it is 20 %. In total I lost 160 pounds in about 18 months. It took a well balanced low calorie diet, and exercise. Yes you can lose the weight without exercise. But, these people look like they have lost 100 pounds or more. The exercise gave me a toned firm body, plus the exercise helped with my depression.

My new found fitness has opened up my world to so many new things. I am now a cyclist. I have done a century, which is a 100 mile bike ride done in one day, I did it in 6 hours 15 minutes. Last spring I ran my first ½ marathon in 2 ½ hours. I love to play tennis and hike; there are just so many things I can now do, that I never dreamed of before. It is not just being thin; it is so much more than that. I have self respect.

Weight loss is so much more than taking off the pounds. You have to really get to know yourself, and learn why you turn to food for comfort. It must be a total lifestyle change, both physically and mentally. The emotions to food is a strong bond. A baby’s first instinct is to suck on anything put into its mouth. When he cries, his mother feeds him, such comfort, not only to baby but to mother. This relationship with food continues throughout your life. If not started out in a healthy way, that relationship can lead to obesity.

In order for an obese person to lose weight for life, your relationship with food has to change, no longer the emotional pacifier, it must be considered fuel for your body. How is this done?, it is a long process, you must face your demons and deal with the emotions directly. It is not easy, or course nothing in life worth while is. You have spent your life making yourself comfortable, and it’s time to get out of your comfort zone.

I have now dedicated my life to helping other achieve their weight loss goals. I know it takes more than just diet alone. I still see that 300 pound woman looking back at me in the mirror from time to time. I remember the pain, the embarrassment, and the hate that I felt toward myself. This makes me stronger and more determined to keep this weight off and to help as many people as I possibly can.

why I am so passionate about WLS

I have had 10 friends have the surgery. 6 are dead. I am so sick of seeing my friends die it tears me up. everyone was told by docs that is a person did not support them 100% in their choice then they were not a friend. just really makes me sad mad angry frustrated and I lash out. I just want to say stop please, I can't see another person killed from this.

BTW not all deaths were blamed on the surgery although all were connected
Cindy - kidney failure 2 years out
Julie - heart failure - 3 years out
Janet - ruptured sutures after second surgery
George - malnutrition, liver failure
Pam - electrolite imbalance 5 years out
Jerry - on the table

the other four, one is doing well never got to goal but tries very hard has had two hernia surgeries so far. the other gained his weight back plus, one developed sever depression and a heart problem, the last is way thinner but looks pale and is tired a lot.

I have not seen the good side of this world and find it scary they all refered to after surgery as crossing over. I always heard that in relation to death.

they had three top surgeons between them and two hospitals....

so they shape my opinion and it is shaped from fear fear of watching another person suffer or worse die.

you may not like me or my opinion but it has a basis

WW "new" program

So WW did a minor change to their program. Instead of a "one size fits all" points value you have to calculate it based on your weight, age, sex, activity level during the day, etc. I find it a lot easier to stay in my points value now. It's higher than it was, and I know I'll be losing slower, but I'm ok with that. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Though this week I've already dropped 7 lbs. I know it's mostly water, but it's a good motivator.

Once my ankle completely heals I'll be starting their walking program in the latest WW magazine. It's very doable and the goal is to have you walking a 1/2 marathon (13 miles with a 3mph speed) at the end of the year. The dogs will definitely enjoy this. I'm hoping to eventually get up to running part of it at least.

Doing South Beach

Joanna and I started South Beach on Jan 1. I started at 337.

It's actually going better than I expected so far -- I feel satisifed most of the time and I'm eating less than I normally would if I just cut the carbs. We're on phase one so far -- where you can have pretty much anything except foods that much more than a trace of carbs. You can have string cheese, which I latched onto the first day and had about 10. Since then, though, I haven't had much of a craving for them. I have much lower cravings for food in general and don't feel like I miss the carbs at all. You can add in carbs after the first two weeks, slowly.

My last weigh in was 333, although I was at 331 last night.

rejoined WW saturday

I joined with the monthly pass, that is way cool. I went saturday and sunday two meetings in a week, this gave me a good attitude. I will be looking at my weight cause right now doc says I have to to monitor stuff.

went to the doc everything is worse, different drugs, go back in two weeks to see what these can do. he was happy with my WW choice. :)

looked up one of the drugs that is for the arrythmia and heart damage. It is a Beta Blocker.
Wickipidea says Beta blockers are a class of drugs used for various indications, but particularly for the management of cardiac arrhythmias and cardioprotection after myocardial infarction. Whilst once first-line treatment for hypertension, their role was downgraded in June 2006 in the United Kingdom to fourth-line as they perform less well than other drugs, particularly in the elderly, and there is increasing evidence that the most frequently used beta-blockers at usual doses carry an unacceptable risk of provoking type 2 diabetes.

so with a new risk I am striving hard for that 10% cause every pound will protect me.

thanks for listening.

Hello,

My name is Sue. I have decided it is time for me to break down and reach out for help. I have over 100lbs to lose and I keep on gaining weight. I have now admitted that I am 100% addicted to food. It consumes most of my thoughts.

As Donna I also had Plastics with Dr.C in Curitiba- Brazil, I had a facelift and a Breast Augmentation on may 2006. I’m very happy with the results as well !

Many of my friends have been in Brazil for Plastics, Donna is right, the facilities and Dr.C work are excellent.

Plastic Surgery Success Story

Dear Friends,

Hi my name is Donna, I'm 54, I want to relate my Plastic Surgery experience for all interested.

On march 2005 I had a Tummy Tuck and Breast Augmentation procedure done in Brazil with Dr.C, I've heard about his clinic and his work from some friends who've been there for Plastics as well and were very happy with the results.

He did an excellent job, I couldn't be happier, Dr. C is very skilled and I will never regret going to Brazil to have Plastics.

Due to the economy differences between Brazil, North America and Europe, Plastic Surgery is very affordable for us, middle class people.

I did some price research in US and Europe before and then I realized that comming to Brazil for Plastics is less expensive, even with the added expense of a plane ticket, hotel and food, the quality of medical care is excellent.

If you need more info I'll be glad to answer all your questions about my experience.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PUBLICITY, THE INTENTION IS TO INFORM ALL INTERESTED GREAT TIPS ON PLASTIC SURGERY.

hugs,

Donna M.

Weekly meal plan

I used to write out which dinners I wanted to cook for the next week so I could make myself a grocery list. It was all fine and good, but it only covered dinner and it wasn't specific. Some meals I never even got around to making. So this week I decided to make meal plan for the whole week. Breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner, dessert for each day. I then tallied the calories up. Each days comes between 1200-1350 calories.

Has anyone found that weekly meal plans help?

Out of place-My perspective & 120 lbs to lose

I attend WW meetings and really sometimes feel out of place due to the amount of weight I need to lose.(120 lbs)
When I used to have 30-40 lbs to lose I was able to feel like I had something in common with most of the women.
Not many leaders lost 100+.

Please don't take me the wrong way in regards to people with 30 pounds to lose.
I am happy to find this group online and want to connect with people who have these types of weightloss challenges.

Here's my perspective/observations:
-I feel handicapped sometimes because I can't fit in public seats: airline, baseball stadium, theater, restaurants.
-There's more going on with me than the types of foods I eat that contributed to my weight gain - I recognize it's my mentality.
-I'm treated differently because of my size at work and in public. I'm very outgoing and extroverted but I pick up on the looks.
-The weight makes me feel old and puts additional problems on my herniated discs. I'm only 35 but feel like 65.

I can't really say this stuff at WW mtgs & thank you for letting me put a voice to my perspective.

Kerry G.

About me.......................................................................................................
I'm new to this board but have been a Weight Watcher since 1993.
I've usually had to lose 30-40 pounds and reached goal weight after 6 -12 months.
Currently have 120 pounds to lose, am 35, married and have 2 boys - 2 1/2 and 9 months. i also work full time.

Question about doing it alone

I was thinking of going back to WW but just cannot seem to convice myself that is the right path (not fond of some of the people int he groups). thought of Jenny Craig but we eat out all weekend and I love to cook DH dinner so that seems out. LA weight loss is too much $$$. and FA is too restrictive. I have done TOPS for years and it really does not work for me.

I have a friend in AZ who wants to help "sponser" me. he is a friend but I will lie to him cause I do not want to hear his ideas as when it comes to weight loss he has little respect in my life as he is at least 100 pounds over weight himself and not working HIS program.

I have calorie books, points books, journals, calorie king software, I have a treadmil and stationary bike and love my bike, also have a balance ball hand weights and rubber band resistance that I like so no need for a gym.

so thinking I have the tools, should I go it alone? Do we really need to meet with people int he flesh or is it possible to make it on our own with a tribe behind us? what would you think the best way to stay focused?

I really really want to do this. I was 277.6 this morning again, I just would love to get below 190 and maintain it.

Crappy Food = Feeling Crappy

For the last month I've done a total purge of my diet and what I have in my kitchen.

I no longer drink sodas, even diet sodas. The only beverages I now drink are water and skim milk. The skim milk is hormone/antibiotic free from a local dairy.

I no longer eat anything that comes out of a box. Boxes usually equal processed.

The only sweet thing I eat is fruit.

The only simple carbs I'll eat are whole grain, and in a very limited amount. Maybe 1-2 per week.

My fruit and veggies are all bought from local growers and are organic or I grow them myself (organic of course).

My eggs and meat are hormone/antibiotic free.

Nearly every dinner is homemade.

No more carbs for breakfast. I now eat scrambled eggs with mushrooms and 1 cup milk. It consists of 1 whole egg and 1/2 cup egg whites and a 1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms. Non-stick skillet = no added fat

Lunches consist mostly of leftovers or a salad.

So I made these changes and have been feeling pretty good. I find that I don't need nearly as much food to feel satisfied for longer periods of time. yay protein and insoluble fiber! But then this weekend we had a birthday party for my bf's son. I had a small peice of cake, some
ice cream that I didn't even finish and a few Doritos. None of this even tasted very good anymore. I also found that I physically felt sick after eating this food. My body was pissed at me. I was surprised because I didn't feel an obvious change when I switched to the good food. it was a gradual change that was unnoticed. But once I *briefly* went back I realized how bad that food really was. No more.

Have a game plan! Let's hear it...

What I do: I buy the candy halloween day, not before, I will eat it! After my girls do their trick or treating they get to choose 25 pieces of candy, the remainer goes to the shelter. Believe me, if the kids only have 25 peices, they keep track of them, if one is missing you will hear about it.

You can so give out other things, pencils, toys, pretzels, rasins, ect...

Don't let this day send you into a benge.

Want to hear your ideas.

never got that from family, always felt like an outsider....
I have searched my whole life.
I turned to food for love but now feel betrayed by that affair.

the one thing I like about our motorcycle adventures is the people. All are in recovery of one form or another all 12 step programs. All have looked for love in all the wrong places. In their presents I have never in my life felt such uncondional love from so many. there is never judgement, there is always a pat on the back, a way to go, a hug.... these people are amazing and give me the emotional warmth I have always searched for. I love camping season and the peace it brings to my soul.
Have any of you tried cleansing with Isagenix ?

I just went to the isagenix convention in Las Vegas, and was very moved when members of the '100 pound club' (there were at least 20 of them) got onstage and told their stories. One man up there had lost 200 pounds through Isagenix.

When you cleanse your body on a cellular level and cleanse all of the body's filter systems, the body is able to rid itself of toxins and release fat. I truly believe everybody needs to cleanse for optimal results with weight loss, plus, Isagenix replenishes the body, so all the cravings for bad stuff is greatly reduced. Clean bodies crave clean food! When you are full of toxins and bad stuff, you crave more of it, so that is one reason (among many) why you should cleanse.

Anyway, Isagenix has worked for me with the weight I had to lose, and I have been able to keep it off successfully for over a year now. Email me if you have questions about this program; it's wonderful and has made a big difference for me. My web site is www.christineelder.isagenix.com if you want to check it out and read more about the products. Also - www.weightlosshalloffame.net is a great site that has people's weight loss stories on it. Isagenix has also really helped with my mood and energy; it's amazing how good you can feel when your cells actually start getting what they need! Or you can email me at moreenergynow@hotmail.com
best,
Christine

I gave away ALL my size 8's. I wore them 20 years ago when I was bullimic, those days are gone. that and I will never wear office cloths again working from home. so now the past is behind me I can focus on today. this was a HUGE thing for me. I kicked myself so many times looking at this wardrobe and I finally just thought enough. I am giving them to a drug rehab where women will use them when they enter the work forse. I feel good about helping others and saving me from my own regret. If by chance I wear a size 8 again, I will buy me new stuff, for the new me.

I tried 1200 calories yesterday. I almost made it. I ended up having a bit over 1300 calories instead. But I didn't feel ravanous at all. I think it's a doable amount.

Core

So my gym has this diet diagnostic program. I tried it out and it recommended that I should take on a diet very similar to Core. Flex hasn't been working very well for me. I'll lose 4lbs one week and gain 1 lb/week for the following 3 weeks and then drop another 4-5 lbs. I've been following plan and I even tried going back to Winning Points which dropped 2 pts/day. I've also been going to the gym. Still had the same pattern of weight loss. It's VERY frustrating. So I'm going to give Core a shot. I've finally learned that I really don't need much food to feel satisfied, which is the trick with Core. Soooooo, I'll keep you posted.

Body Love Workshop: September 19

Over the years I have seen some very beautiful people -- men and women alike
-- judge their bodies harshly and from a place which often lacks self love.
Having struggled on my own journey in this domain for the past 15 years (I
have lost 120 pounds already), I realize it is not always easy to accept
ones self. (Yet is is self acceptance that made weight loss possible for
me.)

As a clinically obese woman, I am often surprised to find I love my body
more than some woman who are a size 8. I was recently inspired when one of
my closest friends -- a very hot woman -- confided in me how much she hated
parts of her body. Saddened by this interaction and inspired to help people
make a change, I designed a course based on my own journey and the coaching
I was able to offer her (and many others through the years) to help her work
with her body and begin to love it as it is. If you have ever said, "I hate
my <insert body part here>!" and never want to say that again, I invite you
to join me for this class.

This class is not about losing weight, counting calories, or designing a
workout program for changing one's body.

Instead, this gathering focuses on self acceptance as the first step toward
any lasting change by creating a commitment to learn to love ones body
exactly as it is today.

This 2 hour course begins by setting the tone for the evening through
introducing the Flowology Mindset™. From there, participants will create a
representation of their body as they see it today. This representation will
focus on acknowledging the shape of our bodies today without judgment about
what it means -- noting statistical information with number, pictures, words
and anything else which inspires us.

The playshop will continue with each person noticing the parts of their body
they like less and doing exercises to begin to shift their experience about
those parts of their body. These practices can be done once at the workshop.
However, we believe they will benefit each person most when done as a daily
practice for just minutes each day until they become unnecessary because
true shifts in self perception have emerged.

The goal of the playshop is to have each participant be able to say, "I love
my body exactly as it is right not, especially those parts of my body I have
not liked in the past."

What: A 3 hour playshop exploring and evolving our relationship to our
bodies
Where: Temple of Poi, 953 Mission Street, Suite 111, SF, CA 94103
When: September 19, 2006 - 7:30 - 9:30 PM
Why: Because life is too short to hate the one thing you'll have to live
with every day: You.
Tuition: $75 including materials; $70 early registration by noon, September 12,
2006.

Hello everyone

I am looking for support and have read some of the posts on here and would like to join you all.

I am married with 2 kids and my starting weight on 11 January 2005 was 338 pounds (153.7 kilos) and I now weigh 281 pounds (127.8 kilos).

I have found in the last 4 months I have stagnated and I am getting bored and need to find the motivation to get me started again.

I go to the gym 5 days a week. 4 days with a personal trainer and 1 day on my own. My trainer is watching my food but I just think my body is used to it all and it is refusing to budge he he he he.

I don't count calories but do use the weight watchers points system. I have been reading others and I think that the points system is different in the USA than it is in New Zealand. I am on 24 points a day but over there for my weight it is like 30 points.. can't quite work out why that is.

Anyway would love to hear from you

Cheers Mandy

Hi, just joined. Here's my predicament. Not only am I overweight, but I also have some major back problems that do not allow for exercise. Any advice on how I can lose the weight without pain or making my back worse? My back problems are in the thoracic area, an unusuall place to have herniations and such, as I have.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanx!

I've been reading this book and it has been very inspirational for me. I've been struggling alot lately with keeping off my weight loss. Thin for Life by Anne Fletcher is a book written about people who have lost alot of weight and have kept it off, how they did it, how they felt, and how their behaviors and mindsets changed to loose and maintain sucessfully! its been incredible for me and I was able to pick it up at Amazon for about $13 with shipping. When I'm feeling like saying screw it or this will never work, I sit and read a little and I remember lots of people loose ane keep it off, and everyone has what it takes!

Well last night was not a very good first weigh in at WW. I gained 1 pound. I don't know why or how but I did. My husband told me it was because I am letting my hair grow long and it added a pound, but I am not sure I believe that one. So now I am going to the YMCA 3 times a week and not just twice.

Have a good day all :)
